Plagiarism Checking Guide: Scan, Read, Fix
plagiarism-checker-online.net Editorial Team | Updated October 3, 2026
The short version: A plagiarism check compares your paper with an index of published sources and shows every match with its source. The score is a starting point. What matters is which passages match and whether you quoted, cited or paraphrased them properly. Scan early, read the matches, fix what needs fixing, and scan again.
Checking a paper for plagiarism has three jobs: find overlaps with other text, decide which overlaps are a problem, and fix the ones that are. This guide follows that order and links to our detailed articles for each step.
For an essay-specific routine, follow how to check an essay for plagiarism. Before uploading a draft, read what Turnitin and other checkers keep so you can distinguish repository indexing from file retention.
- Six steps to check an essay, from a manual spot-check to reviewing the revised draft.

Step 1: Understand What a Scan Does
A scan is a comparison, not a verdict. The software looks for passages that match documents in its index and highlights them so a person can judge. A match can be a properly cited quotation, a common phrase, a reference entry, or text that really was copied. The tool cannot tell these apart by itself.

Step 2: Read the Score and the Matches
The similarity score is the share of your text that matches other sources. A high number is not automatically a problem, and a low number is not automatically safe. A paper full of correctly marked quotations can score high, while a few copied paragraphs from an obscure source can hide in a low score. Always open the matches.

- Acceptable Plagiarism Percentage and the Plagiarism Percentage page explain thresholds and why they differ.
Step 3: Fix What Needs Fixing
Most problems come from the same few habits: a quotation without quotation marks, a paraphrase that follows the source sentence by sentence, a missing citation, or reuse of your own earlier work. Fix them by rewriting in your own structure, quoting exactly where wording matters, and citing every source you used.

- Paraphrasing vs. Plagiarism shows how close is too close.

Step 4: Scan Before You Submit
If your university runs Turnitin or a similar system, the safest moment to find an issue is before your instructor does. Our guide Check Your Paper Before Turnitin walks through it. Run the scan on the version you plan to submit, and scan again after you make changes.
You can also use the free tools while you write: the Source Check checks up to 20 references against Crossref, the Document Check compares an original and a revised text and counts words and pages, and the Writing Coach flags long sentences, passive voice and filler words.

What does a plagiarism checker compare my paper with?
It compares your text with the documents in its index and shows passages that match, with links to the sources. Our scans use PlagAware, which checks against public sources on the web. It does not have access to paywalled articles and it does not keep a pool of submitted student papers.
Is there one percentage that counts as safe?
No. A similarity score depends on how many quotations, references and common phrases your paper contains, and every institution sets its own expectations. Read the matches, not just the number. Our articles on acceptable percentages and on reading a report explain how to judge them.
When should I scan my paper?
Scan when the draft is complete enough to read as a whole, and early enough to fix problems. For a long thesis, scan chapters as you finish them instead of waiting for the final week.
