Writing Coach: academic style check for English
Find long sentences, passive voice, filler words and informal wording in your paper. The analysis is free and rule-based. Want the AI to do the editing? Add the optional rewrite for $0.29 per page.
Yellow marks a suggestion to consider. Coral marks informal wording or a doubled word. A dotted underline marks a long sentence, a wavy underline a noun-heavy one. Hover a mark for the reason.
The tool flags patterns. It does not judge your argument, structure or sources, and it can miss problems or flag text that is fine.
Let the AI edit the flagged patterns
Optional and paid. Choose what to improve and the AI rewrites only those patterns. Every change is shown beside your original paragraph with a reason, and you accept or reject each one. The free analysis above works without it.
Eight checks for clearer academic English
Every flag comes with the exact words, so you can decide what to change.
Long sentences
Marks sentences over 30 words and shows how your sentence lengths are spread, from short to over 40 words.
Passive voice
Finds passive constructions and shows the share of sentences that use them, so you can check where the doer matters.
Filler and hedges
Counts intensifiers such as "really" and "basically" and stock phrases, and shows how many hedges you use per 100 words.
Wordy phrases
Spots phrases like "in order to" and "due to the fact that" and suggests a shorter form for each one.
Hidden verbs
Catches phrases like "make a decision" and sentences packed with abstract nouns and chains of "of".
Repetition
Flags doubled words, a content word used four times in three sentences, and three sentences that start alike.
Informal wording
Finds contractions, slang, vague words such as "stuff", direct address with "you" and exclamation marks. You can switch this off.
Readability score
Flesch Reading Ease and an approximate grade level, based on sentence length and syllables per word.
From draft to cleaner text in three steps
Add your text
Paste a section or upload a .docx, .txt or PDF file. Use a longer passage for better results.
Read the report
Check the counts and open the examples. Each flag explains what it found and often suggests a shorter form.
Edit in your own words
Use the highlighted text to revise in your document, or order the optional AI rewrite for the flagged patterns. Then check the new version for plagiarism before you submit.
What this tool does not do
The free analysis does not rewrite
The analysis points at style patterns and leaves every change to you. It does not correct grammar or spelling and it does not use AI. If you want the flagged patterns edited, the optional AI rewrite does that, and you accept or reject each change. It does not check facts either.
It does not judge content
Argument, structure and sources are outside its reach. Style norms also differ by field. To check your text for copied passages, run a plagiarism scan, and verify references with the Source Check.
Data handling: the free analysis runs in your browser only. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged. For the paid AI rewrite, your text is processed only after payment. It is sent to Anthropic, the provider of the Claude AI model, stored encrypted on our server and eligible for request-triggered cleanup 72 hours after completion or failure, or after 24 hours without an update for unfinished paid orders. There is no guaranteed deletion timer. Details in the privacy policy. English only. Results are approximate, in particular sentence splitting and syllable counts.
Questions about the Writing Coach
Yes. The analysis is free, needs no account and has no daily limit. A text can have up to 100,000 characters, which is roughly 55 standard pages. Only the optional AI rewrite is paid.
The analysis does not. The checks are fixed rules and word lists, so the same text always gets the same result. That also means the tool can miss problems and can flag things that are fine. It flags patterns and does not understand your argument. The optional AI rewrite is a separate paid step that uses the Claude AI model and starts only after you pay.
Not for the free analysis. The text is analyzed in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored, not even in local storage. If you order the optional AI rewrite, your text is sent to Anthropic, the provider of the Claude AI model, but only after payment. We store it encrypted; texts become eligible for cleanup 72 hours after completion or failure, or after 24 hours without an update for unfinished paid orders. Cleanup runs on later requests, not a guaranteed timer, so deletion may occur later.
No. Passive is normal when the actor is unknown or unimportant, for example in a methods section. The tool marks it so you can check the cases where the doer matters. The rule can also flag adjectives such as "was limited" that only look like passive verbs.
It is a formula based on average sentence length and syllables per word. Higher scores are easier to read, and scholarly writing often scores in the difficult range. Syllables are estimated by a rule, so the value is approximate. Use it to compare two drafts of the same text, not to pass or fail one.
No. The word lists and the readability formula are written for English. Results for other languages are not meaningful.
No. The tool looks at style, not at content, structure or sources. Rules and norms also differ by field and instructor, so use the flags as prompts for your own editing. Your supervisor's feedback and your style guide come first.
$0.29 per page of 1,800 characters, with a minimum order of $2.90. You see the exact price for your text before you pay. It is a one-off payment, not a subscription.
Only the patterns you choose, such as long sentences, passive voice, filler words, hidden verbs, repetition or informal wording. Each change is shown beside your original paragraph with a reason, and you accept or reject it. Changes to numbers and detected citation or quotation patterns are withheld. Detected patterns include capitalized surnames in Smith (2021), Smith and Jones (2021) and Smith et al. (2021), parenthetical citations with years from 1900 to 2099, bracketed numeric citations such as [1-3] and [2, 5], and simple balanced single or double quotes, including curly quotes. Unusual citation formats, nested quotes or missing quotation marks may not be detected. It does not check facts. Check every citation, quotation and suggested change against your original and sources manually before use.
