Style rules checked October 23, 2026 · Next check by January 21, 2027 · AI-assisted source and citation checks; not human review

The short answer: To cite this X post in APA 7, list the author name and handle, exact date, first20words, attachment description when present, post descriptor, X and permalink, in that order. Every citation below comes from a real citation engine, in APA Style 7th edition, MLA Handbook 9th edition, Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition (notes and bibliography) and Cite Them Right 12th edition (author-date/Harvard).

Real short post with primary and MLA corroboration

The original X page identifies Ezra Klein, @ezraklein, and April 22,2022. MLA's 2024 name-change article uses the same post, allowing the platform label and original post identity to be checked separately.

Synthetic text-only organization post

Illustrative short post by a fictional organization; the account handle is fictional metadata rather than a real account or endorsement. The source details in this example are made up to show the format.

How the styles differ for this source

StyleOrder of elementsWhat is differentSource
APA Style 7th editionauthor name and handle, then exact date, then first20words, then attachment description when present, then post descriptor, then X, then permalinkAPA's current page uses X and Post terminology; include a real-name/handle pair when supplied and distinguish attached media from post text.Style guide
MLA Handbook 9th editionaccount name, then post text or description, then X, then date, then URL as displayedMLA's March2024 guidance uses X as the container for old and new posts while retaining a supplied twitter.com URL rather than manually rewriting it.Style guide
Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition (notes and bibliography)account name and handle when useful, then post text up to relevant limit, then platform, then date, then URLChicago often permits a text mention or note instead of requiring a bibliography entry for social-media material.Style guide
Cite Them Right 12th edition (author-date/Harvard)author or account, then year, then post text or description, then platform, then day and month, then URL, then access dateThe pinned Harvard output is Cite Them Right12th. Edge cases

  • An old post still has a twitter.com URL. MLA says to use X as the container and copy the source URL as supplied. A platform rebrand is not a reason to invent a new permalink. Style guide. Applies to MLA Handbook 9th edition.
  • The post includes an image or video. APA distinguishes the post text from an attached-media description. Do not silently describe an attachment you have not opened. Style guide. Applies to APA Style 7th edition.
  • The account has both a real name and a handle. APA's reference uses the name and bracketed handle. Keep them as distinct metadata; the handle is not a surname suffix or part of the in-text author name. Style guide. Applies to APA Style 7th edition.
  • A post is longer than a reference title allows. APA uses the first20 words. Chicago's examples permit a longer excerpt; do not assume the same truncation rule applies to every style. Style guide. Applies to APA Style 7th edition.

Common mistakes

Changing every old link to x.com by hand

MLA says to copy the URL actually supplied.

Not this: A guessed new URL substituted for a checked source link

Do this (MLA Handbook 9th edition, reference list entry): Klein, Ezra. “My phone keeps autocorrecting ‘I’ to ‘AI’ which is a little on-the-nose.” Post. X, 22 Apr. 2022, x.com/ezraklein/status/1517591690101489665.

Making the handle part of the person's family name

This corrupts author identification, especially in-text.

Not this: Klein[@ezraklein] treated as a surname

Do this (APA Style 7th edition, in text): (Klein, 2022)

Claiming an attachment is present without checking it

Attachment labels must correspond to the actual item.

Not this: Image attached to the fictional text-only example

Do this (Cite Them Right 12th edition (author-date/Harvard), reference list entry): Example Research Office (2025) “Our source list now records the version checked for every shared chart.,” X.

Check before you cite

  • Record the displayed real name and account handle separately.
  • Open the exact post permalink.
  • Verify the post's date rather than using the profile join date.
  • Preserve the actual source URL even after a platform rebrand.
  • Check attachments before describing them.
  • Apply your style's own title-length rule.

Is this the right source type?

Treat the account, the post and the platform name as separate pieces of information. An X profile can show a person's real name alongside a handle, but that handle is not part of the person's family name and should not corrupt an in-text citation. The real example is a short Ezra Klein post that appears both on the original platform and in MLA's 2024 explanation of the change from Twitter to X. MLA says to use X as the container while copying the URL provided by the source, even when it retains a twitter.com address. Do not rewrite a permalink merely to make its domain match a newer brand label. APA's current examples use Post terminology and limit the reference title to the first20 words. Check separately whether a post includes an image or video and whether you actually used that attachment. A reference to a post does not justify an invented description of media you have not opened. For a deleted or inaccessible item, preserve what you can honestly document about the version consulted rather than manufacturing a working URL or an unverified date.

Frequently asked questions

MLA's 2024 guidance uses X as the container, including for older posts, but says to copy the actual supplied URL.

No. A handle is separate metadata. APA uses it in the reference's account identification, not as part of the family name in an ordinary in-text citation.

APA uses the first20 words of the post and separately describes attached media when applicable.
