Preliminary | 19 October 2026 | Version 0.2
Preliminary research dataset: first 40 institutions
Use these 40 policy records to check permission, disclosure, and scope before using AI in coursework. The examples below explain what to look for; the records and downloads show the supporting sources. If your institution is missing, the checklist gives you a way to check its rules yourself.
This is a preliminary research dataset, not a study. It is not representative and supports no population conclusions, category frequency comparisons, rankings, or grades.
Three policy examples you can use
These examples show how to read the records, not how common any policy is. They were checked against the linked institutional documents on October 19, 2026. Open the source and confirm the current rules for your own course before acting.
1. Check permission before thinking about citation
Kent State's academic misconduct policy covers all its campuses. It treats using generative AI to produce assigned coursework as cheating unless the instructor expressly permits it in the syllabus or assignment. For the Tuscarawas record, the practical question is whether the proposed use is expressly permitted, not simply whether you can cite the tool. Read Kent State's policy, definitions section, or open the Tuscarawas record.
2. Permission and disclosure are separate checks
The University of Detroit Mercy document applies to students taking College of Business Administration courses, not automatically to every course at the university. When instructors allow AI, it requires citation that includes the platform and prompt. It also tells students to clarify unclear course instructions before using AI. Read the CBA policy, pages 1 and 2, or open the Detroit Mercy record.
What to do: Ask both whether your intended use is allowed and how it must be documented. A citation is not a substitute for permission.
3. A faculty guide is not blanket permission for students
The UTSA document in this batch is guidance for faculty. It presents different course approaches, including allowing, limiting, or not authorizing generative AI. That is why the record identifies institutional guidance rather than treating the document as a universal permission rule. Read UTSA's faculty guidelines, pages 2 and 6, or open the UTSA record.
What to do: Check who a document addresses and which course, school, or campus it covers. A supportive introduction does not answer whether AI is allowed for your assignment.
Before submitting: check these five things
This is our suggested workflow for using the records, not a statement of any university's rules.
- Find the applicable documents. Start with the linked institutional policy, then read your school or program rules, syllabus, and assignment instructions. Check dates and campus scope; do not assume one document replaces another.
- Name the actual task. Check brainstorming, grammar feedback, translation, coding, and generating draft text separately. Permission for one use should not be assumed to cover another.
- Resolve unclear or conflicting instructions. Ask your instructor about the specific assignment before using the tool. Keep the response with the assignment instructions.
- Follow the required disclosure. Record the tool and how you used it, and check whether prompts, outputs, citations, or an appendix are required. Our AI usage statement tool can help draft a disclosure, but it cannot grant permission or determine compliance.
- Review the work yourself. Check claims against original sources and keep drafts and research notes. Do not treat a plagiarism or AI-detector score as permission to submit.
A question you can adapt for your instructor
Replace the bracketed details with your real assignment and intended use. This is a writing template, not an institutional policy statement.
For [assignment], may I use [tool] to [specific task]? I plan to use its output by [describe what you will do]. Does this fit the course rules, and what disclosure, citation, prompts, or outputs should I include?
What this is and is not
The first 40 institutions follow a fixed, randomly ordered sampling sequence. The frame uses the IPEDS HD2024 directory and EF2023A enrollments downloaded on 2026-10-03.
The minimum of 400 coded institutions has not been met. Inter-rater reliability and Cohen's kappa have not been established. There has been no second human blind coding and no independent human second review.
Downloads

Coverage and gaps
40 institutions; 11 variables; 440 cells; 79 coded values; 361 unknown; 12 institutions with zero coded values. These are file counts, not findings.
Unknown means no defensible value was found within our search protocol, not that an institution has no policy. The protocol checks official institutional pages, uses six site: searches, and has a 15-minute time box.
Coverage is limited to public pages. Login-only policies may be missed. Campus or school applicability is partly unresolved; school-scoped statements must not be generalized. Policies can change, and AI extraction errors are possible. Institutional identity and enrollment reflect the frozen frame, not a new check of current institutional status.
Method and codes
The first 40 institutions follow a fixed, randomly ordered sampling sequence. The frame uses the IPEDS HD2024 directory and EF2023A enrollments downloaded on 2026-10-03.
Order SHA-256:
529aad6d2da16cea20e6c392e5b5ee6a9f61de24344870c60fb8102111fcec90The six searches cover honor code, academic integrity, plagiarism, generative AI, ChatGPT, and artificial intelligence policy. Only public pages are used. Sources include official policy pages, handbooks, catalogs, and institutional guidance. Every coded field has a source URL, a verification date, and a short evidence quote. The codebook calls for quotes under 25 words.
The not_found categories below export as unknown. Unknown does not mean no policy. A null value also exports as unknown.

Sources and field values
Use your browser's Find command (Ctrl+F or Command+F) to locate an institution in the table, then open its record below. This list covers only the first 40 institutions, not every college. A missing institution or an unknown field tells you nothing about whether AI is allowed.
The rank is position in the fixed sampling order, not a rating. Scroll tables horizontally on small screens. Open an institution below for coded fields and evidence.

How this was made
Research and initial coding were performed by Claude-based AI research agents in Elitewerk OS using public websites. A second AI agent checked a sample of the first version: this was AI QA, not human review.
A targeted AI follow-up on 19 October 2026 rechecked sources for ten risk cases and made 19 field changes at four institutions (ranks 6, 23, 29, 35): 7 previously unknown fields were coded and 12 source or procedural details were updated. Other proposed additions, including additions for two further institutions, were deliberately not included.
Markus Nick, responsible for this page's content and research, states that he personally looked through the data and performed his own quality control as of 19 October 2026. There is no row-by-row review log, no second human coder, and no external review.
Corrections and changelog
Institutions can request corrections at info@plagiarism-checker-online.net. Institutional statements are reported neutrally, without judging institutions.
